Self Assessment (SA100)

Company directors and many other individuals file a Self Assessment tax return each year. For an online return the deadline is 31 January after the tax year ends. If HMRC sent the notice to file after 31 October, it is 3 months after the date of the notice.

In Fyling you prepare the return, work out the tax, record your review and the client's approval, and send it to HMRC under your practice's own HMRC online filing login.

What Fyling does and does not do

Fyling works out the tax from the income you enter, using the rates for the tax year.

It covers employment, dividend, savings and UK property income. Scottish income tax, self-employment and partnership income, student loan repayments, capital gains and foreign income are outside what it works out: if any of these apply, it says so at the start and leaves the calculation to you.

The employment pages record pay, tax deducted and the directorship answer.

How to prepare a return

Open a client who is a person, then Self Assessment. The return has seven steps.

  1. Tax year. You answer six yes-or-no questions about what applies to the client. Every one needs an answer.
  2. Employment: pay and tax deducted for each job, and whether it was a directorship.
  3. Dividends.
  4. Savings and property: interest, rental income and costs, Child Benefit received, and pension and Gift Aid payments as the client paid them. Fyling grosses up the payments at the basic rate.
  5. Tax: the calculation, beside the figures that drive it.
  6. Check. The client's UTR and National Insurance number are filled in from their record, with only the last four characters shown.
  7. Approval. Your practice's review and the client's approval are recorded. Change a figure afterwards and both approvals stop counting.

Before a return can be sent

  • Self Assessment authorisation is recorded on the client's HMRC access & handover page.
  • Your practice's HMRC online filing login for Self Assessment is saved for the mode you are in.
  • Every job has a directorship answer.

Keeping track across clients

The Self Assessment tracker, linked from the Tasks page, shows where each client's return stands for the year, whether or not you prepare it in Fyling.
